We are utterly devastated at the suspension of 2k20 courses and apprehensive about the consequences.

We are very pleased to have Lurgan-Ar-Líne as a fallback, but this undoubtedly is a distant second to going to the Gaeltacht.

On the other hand, we are cautiosly optimistic at the advances made in relation to the hugely ambitious Lurgan22 project.

Lurgan has been advocating the merits of a purpose-built campus for the past 20 years.

In 2007 Lurgan obtained planning permission for a 4 floor multi-use centre.

In hindsight it was for the best that it wasn’t built because the campus that is now being mooted is superior in many aspects.

These are images from 2007 project which had full planning permission. We are unable as yet to show images of Lurgan22.

The current project is being led by Údarás na Gaeltachta and supported by Roinn na Gaeltachta.

Lurgan has closely liaised with Údarás’s architectural & engineering team and we are thrilled with the results.

Lurgan is handing over adjacent lands (purchased at substantial cost for this singular purpose), offering all our aquired acumen, experience & competence, proposing to invest substantially in equiping the center to the very highest spec in  lighting, rigging, cabling, sound, audio visual, acoustics, moveable seating/staging etc

The objective is the creation of a sizable multiuse space that can accommodate the widest possible range of educational, cultural, social & entertainment occasions.

Far from being merely a 3-month Summer School Lurgan22 will have a year-round presence with a far-reaching influence of local, national & international standing.

It’s the potential of becoming an all-encompassing Irish Language hub for the “9 months” that’s the most exciting aspect of all.

The central aspect of the building’s design is the “town square / event centre / amphitheatre” feature.

The spacious central “square area” has a substantial number of adjoining multiuse rooms along with a 100-seat tiered “theatre”. There is also an adjoining building with sound proofed rooms and a fine recording studio. All these amenities facilitate year-round educational programs run by independent educational academies where participants are accommodated locally. There is an abundance of high-quality accommodation.

Imagination & creativity are the only limits as to what can be achieved in this fantastic purpose-built campus.

Why Lurgan22 Needs to Proceed Now

  1. Lurgan itself will cease to exist if this project is not undertaken
  2. This is a once-off opportunity to instigate the most exciting Irish Language initiative for a generation.
  3. Failing to proceed will have calamitous consequences for the Irish Language

One example of a vibrant international dimension is the recently launched partnership between Lurgan and Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Wales’s largest National Voluntary Youth Organization.
